As Woodward continues working with Indigenous communities across Canada, our team is in search of a Lawyer in Ontario.

We are seeking a Lawyer preferably with an Aboriginal, Constitutional, Environmental and/or Administrative Law background and a strong commitment to Indigenous self-determination. The ideal candidate has litigation, regulatory and/or governance experience.

Role Overview

The position is full-time and may be remotely based in Ontario with an opportunity to travel to Indigenous communities, and visit our offices in Victoria, BC approximately three or four times per year.

This position requires a strong commitment to Woodward values of Excellence, Respect, Accountability, Trust, and Ethics amongst many other values required of our Indigenous clients as we work within Indigenous legal orders.

Qualifications

This ideal candidate for this position meets the following requirements:

1.     A Lawyer of a 5–10-year call.

2.     The candidate must be a member in good standing with one or more Canadian Law Societies – willing to be called to the bar in BC, ON, and the north.

3.     Experience with modern treaties, eastern communities, as well as familiarity with Crown or Indigenous negotiations led by Indigenous peoples living in Ontario will be considered an asset.

4.     Strong research, legal drafting, and analytical skills are a must.

5.     Experience communicating complex legal concepts and demonstrates experience in Aboriginal, Constitutional, Environmental and/or Administrative Law.

6.     Flexibility to travel and work in Indigenous communities is a necessary condition of employment with a valid driver’s license required as some of the work will be in remote areas that are not otherwise accessible.

7.     Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

8.     Self-motivated interest to contribute and expand in our areas of practice which include Lands, Governance, Section 35, Business and Economic Development, and Northern practice groups.

We offer an anticipated salary range of $120,000 to $170,000 per year (to be negotiated with consideration for education and experience) with a generous range of benefits, including health, dental, RSP contributions, three weeks of vacation, wellness, relocation, and professional development allowances.

Woodward offers flexibility with a hybrid work model. This position is in our Victoria office.
