Neutron Emission Spectrometer Postdoctoral Researcher

Discover TRIUMF, Canada’s particle accelerator centre. We are a publicly funded, not-for-profit research lab that is a hub for discovery and innovation.

Our mission is to serve as Canada’s particle accelerator centre.  We advance isotope science and technology, both fundamental and applied.  We collaborate across communities and disciplines, from nuclear and particle physics to the life and material sciences.  We discover and innovate, inspire and educate, creating knowledge and opportunity for all.

TRIUMF’s diverse community of nearly 600 multidisciplinary researchers, engineers, technicians, tradespeople, staff, and students create a unique incubator for Canadian excellence, as well as a portal to premier global collaborations.  Fueling innovation and improving lives, we are committed to accelerating discovery and shaping a better world.

This position holds a central role in driving the development of a state-of-the-art high-speed neutron detection system, critical for advancing the measurement of plasma temperature within General Fusion’s pioneering projects. You will be at the forefront of designing and refining an intricate detection system comprising highly segmented plastic scintillators, to be read by analog and/or digital Silicon photomultipliers. This system must achieve the remarkable capability of detecting neutrons at rates up to GHz, boasting exceptional efficiency and energy resolution.

As an integral member of a dynamic team consisting of recent PhD graduates, your contributions will be essential in delivering this system to fruition. Your expertise and dedication will be key in realizing this proof of concept, pushing the boundaries of scientific innovation in plasma physics and nuclear fusion.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lead one of the three main projects: 1) optimization of the timing performances at the single channel level, 2) development of a solution for finely segmented (about 100 units each < 1cm3) plastic scintillator and SiPM assemblies with minimum dead spaces, 3) development of an electronics and data acquisition solution scalable to at least 500 channels.
Support the other two main projects not under direct leadership.
Drive the development, implementation and operation of the test setup system based on radioactive sources with decay product captured by reference detector systems (BaF2, CeBr3).
Coordinate all activities at TRIUMF.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

The incumbent must have the following knowledge and skills:

Demonstrated experience in radiation instrumentation, detectors, electronics, and data acquisition system
Experience in data analysis, using either C++ or Python based tools
Experience in neutron detection is an asset
Experience in Silicon photo-multiplier
Extensive experience in data acquisition systems is an asset
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A recent Ph.D. (received in the last 5 years) in physics or engineering
