The Manager, Indigenous Relationships will contribute to anti-colonial processes that enhance reconciliation efforts, strengthen current partnerships, and build meaningful new relationships towards achieving our goals. This position will work with the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Team, reporting to the General Manager, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging to advance more equitable outcomes for Indigenous peoples in the GTA, and at the YMCA. The YMCA of Greater Toronto recognizes it is still on a learning journey regarding these efforts, and will work with the successful candidate to ensure an inclusive environment is fostered for Indigenous employees, volunteers, and participants.
In this role, you will:
· Foster positive relationships and partnerships (new and existing) with Indigenous communities, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, employees, and organizations to enhance the YMCA’s engagement of Indigenous peoples in the Greater Toronto Area.
· Work collaboratively to support program development and implementation of Indigenous focused initiatives across the different service areas in the YMCA GTA.
· Assist with funding opportunities such as grants for programs that support Indigenous peoples across the YMCA’s service areas and offerings.
· Assist in designing and leading employee group(s) engaged in Indigenous focused Truth and Reconciliation work.
· Support capacity building efforts for employees in the charity to engage in Indigenous focused work through training development, coordinating the delivery of specialized learning, securing facilitators, providing necessary supports, developing resources, facilitating large-scale training rollouts, and creating a yearly training calendar.
· Review, edit, and draft Indigenous focused content for newsletters, social media, websites, presentations, and other communications as required.
· Assist with important Indigenous focused efforts both internally and externally, such as acknowledging important dates of awareness, addressing important community needs, and responding to real-time instances that require attention.
· Maintain a deep understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB), assisting in the execution of strategic objectives collaboratively with the DEIB team.
· Collaborate with other Indigenous leaders from partner YMCAs across Ontario and Canada; supporting the federation’s reconciliation work and integrating Indigenous ways of knowing
· Perform other duties as required
You bring:
· Post-secondary degree in Indigenous Studies, Equity Studies, a related field, or equivalent experience.
· In-depth knowledge of Indigenous communities or lived experience as an Indigenous, First Nations, Inuit or Métis person, or as an Indigenous person of Turtle Island.
· Experience working in, or collaborating with Indigenous organizations and communities.
· Experience developing community based programs with Indigenous peoples, or non-Indigenous peoples. Youth based program experience is an asset.
· Experience working in a not-for-profit or purpose-driven organization preferred.
· A strong commitment to, and understanding of Indigenous knowledge, the legacy of colonialism, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action, MMIWG2S calls for justice, intersectionality, anti-racism, with particular experience implementing anti-colonial processes, and providing an anti-colonial lens.
· Well-developed relationship building skills, ability to establish a rapport; take risks, accept and apply learnings and suggestions.
· Excellent verbal communication and facilitation skills.
· Self-driven and independent.
· Ability to thoughtfully approach issues requiring immediate attention.
· Excellent understanding of diversity, inclusion and equity including the ability to identify and address barriers, work effectively with diverse stakeholders, and integrate equity into program design
