Role Overview

We are looking for the right person to be our Indigenous Recruitment Specialist. This newly created position will work on our HR team to grow and develop our legal services staff, and especially recruit Indigenous talent. You share our passion for respecting Indigenous protocols, cultures, traditions, and practices through shared knowledge. You also enjoy promoting a culturally safer work environment and value the experiences and contributions of all staff.

Ideally, you bring lived or learned experience and connections from working with Indigenous communities.

As our Indigenous Recruitment Specialist, you would help us recruit and retain staff in line with our priorities, and values. You would also help develop internal training opportunities to build awareness of Indigenous culture so that we can ensure positive and effective working relationships both with our clients and between all members of our team.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Build and grow a network that supports our search for diverse top talent and keeps on the lookout for promising new resourcing channels or career opportunities that align with the firm’s goals and initiatives.
  2. Manage and support highly targeted, and effective recruitment projects and selection of support staff and management positions from start to finish which includes updating or writing job descriptions, posting positions, reviewing resumes, screening candidates, conducting interviews, completing references and contribute to other HR related projects, as needed.
  3. Build relationships of trust and mutual benefit for candidates, students, communities, and team.
  4. Plan and facilitate professional development and orientations including working with HR to develop policies to increase retention and ensure Woodward is a culturally safe environment.
  5. Create an applicant tracking system to streamline recruitment activities.
  6. Be a data wizard and report on measurable performance indicators and trends.
  7. Manage effective recruitment project communications between Firm Governance, Special Projects Managers, and other teams or stakeholders to ensure consistent messaging and brand image.
  8. Support the performance management process and annual salary reviews.
  9. Assist with recruitment budgets and accountability across departments and teams to ensure resources are adequately allocated to accomplish projects and tasks.

Job Requirements

The Indigenous Recruitment Specialist requires either lived or learned HR experience, including recruitment initiatives. Other requirements include:

  1. Strong knowledge and respect for Indigenous cultural traditions, languages, ceremonies, and protocols involving Elders, traditional knowledge keeper, and Indigenous communities.
  2. Experience working with Indigenous Nations, communities, businesses organizations or students.
  3. 2+ years’ work experience in a talent acquisition or recruitment position with a proven track record in sourcing talent. Experience recruiting in a variety of positions.
  4. Experience advising hiring managers and leadership on recruiting and training initiatives.
  5. Completion of a business administration program or HR management certification and a CPHR designation will be considered an asset.

We offer an anticipated salary range of $60,000 to $80,000 per year (to be negotiated with consideration for education and experience) with a generous range of benefits, including health and wellness, dental, RSP, vacation and additional paid time off, professional development.

This is a full-time position. While most hours will be regular business hours, we anticipate this position will require some evenings and weekends (e.g., to attend community events or job fairs). Fully in-office for the first 6 months throughout the training and probationary period, and then may integrate into a hybrid work arrangement with flexibility for 2-3 days in the office per week subject to the needs of the business.
