Established in 1989, Seafood City is a U.S.-based chain of full-service supermarkets with 32 locations across the United States.  We specialize in Filipino food and products, while offering a growing selection of imported Asian goods and North American staples. Each store contains a food court, which offers a variety of freshly prepared Filipino dishes.

Seafood City launched its first Canadian store in Mississauga, Ontario, in 2017. Due to its resounding success, Seafood City has opened additional locations in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Calgary Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, and Scarborough, Ontario.

To support the continued growth and success of our Winnipeg store, Seafood City Supermarket is looking for eight experienced Bakers to join our team.  You will be working at our Winnipeg store, located at 2311 McPhillips Street, Winnipeg, MB, R2V 3C9, Canada.

This is a permanent, full-time position, based on 40 hours per week, with occasional overtime.

Position

You will be responsible for preparing and cooking fresh Filipino baked goods for sale in our supermarket.  Your duties will include the following:

  • Participate in training of new bakers and other kitchen staff;
  • Prepare authentic Filipino baked goods such as Pan De Sal, Pan De Monay, Pan Amerikano, Pan De Coco, Ensemada Regular and Espesyal, Mamon, Pan De Ube, and Leche Flan;
  • Roll, cut, and shape dough for rolls, breads, and pastries;
  • Mix batters, icing, glazes and toppings;
  • Ice and decorate cakes, and fill pastries;
  • Evaluate baked goods for quality, appearance and taste to ensure they meet employer standards;
  • Cut, bag, and wrap baked goods for display in cabinets and shelves, and restock products as required to meet customer needs;
  • Operate and maintain commercial baking equipment such as bread slicers, mixers, and fryolators in accordance with safety and sanitation standards;
  • Inspect ingredients such as flour, sugar and shortening to detect spoilage;
  • Maintain inventory of ingredients and supplies;
  • Observe strict food safety standards and regulations in the handling and preparation of baked goods;
  • Clean and sanitize work area, storage area, and equipment in accordance with health and safety standards and regulations;
  • Respond to customer inquiries, as required; and
  • Supervise other kitchen staff, as required.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates who can meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Completion of secondary school;
  • At least five years of commercial baking experience, or two years of baking experience combined with the successful completion of a post-secondary diploma or training certificate for bakers;
  • Experience preparing authentic Filipino baked goods such as Pan De Sal, Pan De Monay, Pan Amerikano, Pan De Coco, Ensemada Regular and Espesyal, Mamon, Pan De Ube, and Leche Flan;
  • Experience in pastry and cake decorating;
  • Experience using commercial baking equipment such as bread slicers, mixers, and fryolators;
  • Able to stand for long periods of time;
  • Able to carry up to 25lbs and occasionally lift up to 50lbs;
  • Basic ability to communicate in English (spoken and written).

Compensation

We offer a competitive compensation package, which includes the following:

  • Wage: $17.50 per hour, based on 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week (wages are subject to periodic and incremental raises)
  • Overtime Rate: $26.25 per hour, after 8 hours per day or 40 hours per week
  • 10 days of vacation per year
  • Roundtrip transportation costs for out of province applicants
  • Private health care insurance coverage for out of province applicants (equal to the Manitoba provincial health insurance plan) until such a time that the applicant is eligible for Manitoba provincial health insurance.
